ITINERARY
Exploring the Wild and Vibrant Nature of Southern Slovenia with a Mediterranean Culinary Twist
Our guided tour takes you through breathtaking, diverse landscapes where you can savor the flavors of local cuisine, unwind in tranquil surroundings, and delve into Slovenia's rich history.
The Slovenian Karst is a unique region that captivates with its untamed beauty and natural wonders. The limestone landscape creates a breathtaking backdrop punctuated by dramatic karst formations. Despite its ruggedness and wild character, the Karst is brimming with captivating charm. Over millions of years, the acidity of rainwater has gradually dissolved the rocks, shaping an incredible array of unique geological features. We can’t wait to explore one of these natural marvels and discover how its inhabitants have adapted to this remarkable environment.
We’ll start the day late with a visit to our first destination – Lake Cerknica. This is no ordinary lake; it’s one that regularly disappears in spring. It’s not just a pond either – at its largest, it spans a remarkable 15 square kilometers. Its mysterious disappearance baffled scientists for centuries. We’ll explore fascinating parts of the lake and learn about its history before continuing our journey.
Next, our journey takes a culinary turn. We soon arrive at a windswept plateau renowned for its fertile yet thin soil, which produces a robust, full-bodied red wine known as Teran—best enjoyed with pršut (dry-cured ham). We visit a restored 18th-century house and sample local delicacies: pršut, wrapped ham, frtalja (herb omelet), selinka (celery dish), jota (bean and sauerkraut stew), wood-fired bread, and more.
Afterward, we head to the beautifully preserved hilltop village of Štanjel, where we admire artistic creations by local artisans in the village gallery.
We are now close to the Italian border. Nearly a century ago, this area witnessed the bloody battles of World War I. We pause briefly to pay our respects to approximately 10,000 fallen soldiers, buried in a beautifully maintained cemetery.
To perfectly end the day, we settle into one of the traditional wine cellars, where we learn more about the local wines and cuisine—a memorable experience that will linger in our minds as a highlight of the day spent on the Karst plateau.
As the sun sets, it gently reminds us that it’s time to head back home.
